A theory of granular parthood based on qualitative cardinality and size measures

چکیده
We present a theory of granular parthood based on qualitative cardinality and size measures. Using standard mereological relations and qualitative, contextdependent relations such as roughly the same size, we define a granular parthood relation and distinguish different ways in which a collection of smaller objects may sum to a larger object. At one extreme, an object x may be a mereological sum of a large collection p where the members of p are all negligible in size with respect to x (e.g., x is a human body and p is the collection of its molecules). At the other extreme, x may be a mereological sum of a collection q none of whose members are negligible in size with respect to x (e.g., x is again a human body and p is the collection consisting of its head, neck, torso, and limbs). We cannot give precise quantitative definitions for relations such as roughly the same size or negligible in size with respect to since these are, even within a fixed context, vague relations. The primary focus in the formal theory presented in this paper is on the context-independent logical properties of these qualitative cardinality and size relations and their interaction with mereological relations. In developing our formal theory, we draw upon work on order of magnitude reasoning.

Practical Step towards Sampling in Qualitative Research; Focused on Grounded Theory
Today, there is a growing trend towards qualitative research in different areas of academic investigations. However, students face difficulties in deciding on qualitative methods of research, because most of the literature on qualitative research focuses on the philosophical and theoretical aspects, and they hardly offer any practical guidelines. This problem is rooted in the essence of qualita...

Uncertainty analysis of hierarchical granular structures for multi-granulation typical hesitant fuzzy approximation space
Hierarchical structures and uncertainty measures are two main aspects in granular computing, approximate reasoning and cognitive process. Typical hesitant fuzzy sets, as a prime extension of fuzzy sets, are more flexible to reflect the hesitance and ambiguity in knowledge representation and decision making. In this paper, we mainly investigate the hierarchical structures and uncertainty measure...

The representation of biomedical structure from cellular components to organisms in biomedical ontologies is of pivotal importance, as the internal structure of complex structured objects needs to be referenced in the definition of processes, disorders, phenotypes and many other entities. Yet, most of the existing biomedical ontologies do not contain logical axiomatizations for accurately repre...
